Subsource Rock!

WHAT A BAND!

I was at Guilfest last year, and headed over the muddy fields to the Rocksound cave.

This band were on, rocking out hardcore! How to describe them....Hmm.

Take a rock band, blend in some punk undertones, fold over into some electronic noise/D & B (grime?) , and there you have it, what some would call cyberpunk!!!!!

CyberPunk? Is that where Mohawks go to surf the internet??? Who knows, but it bloody rocks...err...cybers.

I wanted to post this band as I found out much later after the live onslaught that they are from the Guildford area, and practice in the local studios same as us.

Really worth checking out, tipped by metal Hammer's hot list for 2010, and an album sampler is available from their website now...check it out!!!!

New Muse Single - Resistance

Muse have announced their new single Resistance will be out on the 22nd Feb 2010.

Their site shows a preorder page with 7" Vinyl, ltd CD picture disc, and Digital formats being available.

The most exciting part for me is the "B" side of the CD version has a cover of Mega City Four - Prague !!!

A lot of time for Muse, and a lot of time for Mega City Four. I assume the Muse version will rock hard!!!! rather looking forward to receiving my copy.

CLICK ME for the preorder page.

Got tickets for Muse in June, wonder if they are going to play it live?

And...Muse are confirmed for Glastonbury this year headlining!

Drum Injuries pt 2

I mean there are normal drumming injuries, cuts and bruises etc...Drums covered in blood from split fingers blah blah blah. Same old.

However I had forgotten about my most monumental drumming injury to date.

We played some gig in Bristol, wasn't the highlight of my drumming Career, I think we played ok, but with only the headliner, bar staff, soundman and 3 randoms to play to in 300+ capacity venue we were not over the moon. Maybe in years to come people will talk about being there, in a kind of Woodstock sense :) Doubful.

So a few of us pile into a cab after the gig to head out on the town, ask where the closest cashpoint is and to get dropped off.

I was sure the bloke said in Tesco Metro.

So we arrive, I jump out, dodge a few cars on the road, and accelerate like Usain Bolt towards the shop....which has a glass door....and the shops shut.

Result:

Of course everyone stood at the cashpoint NEXT to tesco Metro couldn't quite believe what they had just seen, and I couldn't see anything for blood in my eye.

I think the next night I clipped the wound with a stick as well whilst pulling my usual headbanging Punk Rock moves behind the kit.

So there you have it, Drums, Glass Doors, Booze, and advise from strangers doesn't mix!

The Boring Stuff....

Drummer's Health. One of the most important things to remember about drumming is that it is all wrong!

1. Hours sat down on a substandard stool (sorry "THRONE")

2. Holding 2 peices of wood and smashing skins on a drum

3. Ears, Ringing, DEAF!

4. Injuries sucks!

I myself have had a couple of serious injuries over the years, one relating to forearm tendonitis, and my current one with strained tendons in both my index fingers.

First off sorry that I have no pictures of my fingers post studio recording when they were the size of Germany's prize winning sausage of the year 2004. But they were black and blue, a sight to be seen.

I think the lack of warm ups, general finger exercise (PRACTICE PAD !!!) and the sheer volume of drumming I did in one sitting caused the problem. Thus leaving me out of the Throne for over 3 months now.

Something that a lot of drummers blissfully ignore is the importance of warming up, correct posture, general exercise, EARPLUGS!

To spend many happy years grooving or rocking out on the drums there is plenty of steps that I am going to start following, my progress I will try and document as I go along.

For now there is a weatlh of knowledge on the net about drumming injury, here is an excellent link to get you started.

http://www.sportsrehab.com/drumminginjuries.htm

This should be enough to get your brain in gear!

So for me first off to get back into the seat.

1. Stretches before even touching the sticks

2. Drum Pad Rudiments every night(see previous TASTY DRUMS POST)

Good Luck!

Sonic Boom Six

Whilst on the subject of Ska stylee....last year at Guilfest (or was it the year before????), we stumbled on a band called Sonic Boom Six.

They were noisy and great, with plenty of ska and punk undertones, loads of "bounce" appeal!

Played Reading and Leeds main stages last year I think, some great riffs and stuffz. Check it out.

This blog seems to be turning into a Youtube Highlights bonanza! :)

I will find something more constructive and drum related tomorrow I promise.

Here they are.

Ska Wars

Capdown have been in my list of favs for a long time. Punk, Ska, Rock, all mashed in. Definately a monday morning "pick me up"!

They were awesome live, shame they don't do the circuit anymore...but when they did jesus did they do the circuit...non stop!

Active for 10 years, several albums, and a lot of miles cranked up I imagine. If anyone knows how many gigs these guys actually played I would love to know!

Official site is here:

Drum and Bass at a new level

I imagine many of you drummers have seen or heard of Jungle/Drum and Bass Legend Kevin Sawka

If you haven't then you are missing out on this live D n B guru, his beats are tight, inventive, and in this particular video the use of 2 x hihats and tambourine really is a sight to be seen.

Jungle loop fans, D n B fans, drummers everywhere watch and watch this again!!!!!

To be honest if I ever wanted to try some live Drum and Bass drumming, I would hav a long way to go to match this! :)

Burger and Chips? - At the Drive In of Course!!!

I haven't thought about this lot for a long time, and a riff popped into my head today.

These chaps really know how to make some noise/rock/punk/metal/??? what is it really? Bloody good regardless!!!!!!!

This video seems to be from an Aussy Festival called Big Day Out, in 2001, I am feeling old! thats 9 years ago now.

I am sure a quick search on big day out will show loads of other songs from the event.

Back to Basics - Rudiments

I am off drums at the moment (long story, doctors orders) relating to poorly fingers. I knew something would give one day.

Even though I am not meant to be playing, I can't see the harm in a little pad work to keep me ticking over. Something a lot of us drummer neglect I am sure. yet the most important basis for our craft....rudiments!

Here is a nice site, with the simple rudiments and videos to suit, if you can ignore the adverts and crazy colours!

Mysteroius Girl...

Peter Andre apparently cried on TV today.

I haven't mustered the energy to bother to watch it yet...feel sorry for him in general, but sell your life story for a few quid expect a grilling by the media. Simple!

And don't wear your PJ's to the TV studio.

No more celeb news from me today, this just happened to be top of my google news alerts :)

Good Podcast

Worth checking out is the DarkCompass Podcasts, always good stuff to hear over there!

He's even played The Fins in the past :)

Layout Ideas....

Seems such a menial change, but i think it is going to save a lot of aggro overall!
I use a mix of makes, but just happened to be on the http://zildjian.com/ website so I used their editor:

Current Studio Setup:

Tour Setup:
Only 1 crash difference, but saves a boom stand, and the china never even appears in my "live" setup anyways. Better see what this setup plays like.

Old Pearl Kit, still going Strong!

I am just sat at work thinking about my current setup, and how I need to modify it for the upcoming tour...where I will be performing for 2 bands a night on the same stage....more to follow as I make my mind up.
In the mean time, take an 80's pearl Export, clean it up, get it on a decent stage, it could look like this!

Old Pearl Drum kits for teh win!

Oh the Start

Well where do you start with a TASTY-DRUMS blog post?

First off "Hello and Welcome Along!!!" (shamelessly stolen line from radio1)

Here I am hoping to use the poser of blogging to really add another page to the millions already existing with resources, opinions, reviews about all stuff wot I likes, namely Tasty Drums!

To get us started some bands to listen to, where drums are really tasty:

Biffy Clyro: Biffy Clyro
